The First Rush – Christian's First Big Auto Pack Pull

I’ll never forget the moment this card came out of the pack. It didn’t just appear — it hit. The corners were sharp, the surface clean, and the autograph looked perfect. For a second, I thought I had pulled something unreal. Dad saw it too. We both felt that surge — that maybe this was a true 10‑10.

Waiting for the grade felt like forever. When it came back auto‑10, I was disappointed for a moment… but only a moment. Because the truth is, this card meant more to me than any number. I pulled it myself. I felt that rush. And that feeling changed everything.

This was the card that made me fall in love with collecting. It made me want to learn, to chase, to understand what real value looks like. My younger brother Caeden jumped in with me. We started going for in‑person autographs, meeting players, and seeing the hobby up close — not just online, not just in pictures, but in real life.

Dad showed us the grails that shaped his own journey — his in‑person signed Gretzky rookie, and the Kobe patch auto he calls his centerpiece. Seeing those cards, and holding my first big pull, made me realize something: collecting isn’t just about what a card is worth. It’s about the story behind it.

The Tunnel Moment — Caeden's Steph Curry Rookie Auto

I was nine when Steph Curry stopped in the tunnel at Kia Center and signed my rookie card. I couldn’t believe he was right in front of me — actually signing something I was holding. I watched the marker touch the card. I watched him hand it back. It felt like the biggest moment of my life.

PSA rejected it even with the video of him signing, and I didn’t understand how they could say it wasn’t real when I saw it happen. CGC/JSA authenticated it and gave it an auto 10, proving the moment was exactly what I knew it was.

This card is more than an autograph. It’s the memory of meeting Steph Curry at nine years old, the shock, the excitement, and the feeling I’ll never forget. It’s the moment that made me fall in love with collecting.

Dad's Grails

Moritz Wagner — Genesis 1/1 Premium Nebula

Moritz "Moe" Wagner has always been our favorite around Card Rush — not just for his energy on the court, but for the way he connects with fans. This 2024‑25 Panini Hoops Genesis 1/1 Premium Nebula captures that spirit perfectly.

It's a one‑of‑one, signed boldly in blue ink pen, shimmering like the Orlando lights he plays under. Moe's signature isn't just ink — it's personality. Signed beautifully and inscribed with his famous "And 1!" cry that is heard regularly at Kia Center. This card represents the kind of player who makes collecting feel personal, the kind of grail that stays in the family.

Moe's connection to this family runs deeper than one card. Christian has been a devoted fan of his for years, and the photo above is from the very first time the two of them ever met, at Amway Center. It's turned into a real relationship since — dozens of meetings and counting. Moe's always been kind to Caeden too, but the bond he's built with Christian is its own thing.

To Caeden, From Cole

A rookie card that stopped being about the game the moment he wrote my name on it.

Last season, the Magic traded Cole away. Before he left, there was a send-off at a local park here in Orlando so people could say goodbye, and I went with my older brother Christian, who's thirteen.

I brought my 2020-21 Panini Prizm rookie card, the one with him going up for a shot in his Magic jersey. I wasn't expecting much more than a quick autograph in a long line. But Cole didn't just sign it. He talked to me for a little while, asked me about being a fan, and then he wrote "To Caeden" right across the card before he signed his name.

Grown-ups talk about rookie cards like Cole's like they're worth something. And maybe this one is. But that's not really what I think about when I look at it. I think about a guy who was leaving the team I loved, who still stopped and made time for one more kid in line. That's not something you can put a price on.

The card is on display in my room, and it's not going anywhere.

Players get traded. Teams change.
But some signatures are for keeps.

The Tunnel Signature That Started Us as Knicks Fans, The Game That Sealed It

A Mavericks rookie jersey auto, signed by a Knicks captain in an Orlando tunnel — and the reason our whole family ended up in San Antonio for Game 2 of the Finals.

Brunson was drafted by the Mavericks in 2018, the same class as Luka Doncic, and this Rookie Jerseys patch auto goes all the way back to that season. But we didn't get it signed back then. We got it signed this past season — 2025-26 — the one and only time the Knicks came through Orlando, with Brunson as their captain.

He was one of the guys who stopped for pretty much every fan waiting in the tunnel that night, no rush, no attitude, just signing whatever people put in front of him — including a five-year-old card from a team he doesn't play for anymore. That's how a Mavericks rookie auto ended up signed by a Knick.

At the time, we weren't even true Knicks fans yet. That changed over the rest of that same season, watching Brunson drag New York through a genuinely historic run to the Eastern Conference. And it changed for good the day Tito Nelson called and asked if we wanted to go to a game tomorrow night.

Nelson is my wife's brother — "Tito" to our sons, the museum's junior collectors, since that's Filipino for uncle. He's a lifelong Knicks fan who was there the last time New York made the Finals, back in 1999, also against San Antonio. The game he was calling about was Game 2 of this year's Finals. Knicks-Spurs. He told us it had been over twenty years since he'd seen his Knicks on that stage, and at his age, he figured he might not get another shot at it. He wanted to share it with our family instead of going alone. So he put his youngest son and the four of us on a private jet to San Antonio, and that was that.

Game 2 is the one we'll be telling people about forever. Brunson missed a mid-range look with just over nine seconds left, and Victor Wembanyama had the rebound and the whole floor in front of him to seal it. Instead he threw a blind pass to Stephon Castle without looking — right off Castle's back. Brunson scooped up the loose ball, drew the foul, and split the free throws. Spurs called timeout, inbounded to De'Aaron Fox, kicked it out to Wembanyama for the final look — and he missed. Knicks 105, Spurs 104. Final.

We flew home the next morning as Knicks fans. Not bandwagon ones — the kind that trace it back to a captain who stopped in a tunnel in Orlando to sign a five-year-old card from a team that isn't his anymore.

The Knicks went on to win the title in five, their first since 1973, with Brunson taking Finals MVP. We could hold onto this one for a long time — but we'd rather keep the memories and let another die-hard Knicks fan take the artifact home.

The Tunnel Moment — Caeden's Luka Dončić Rookie Auto

A rookie card from his Dallas days, signed after the trade that sent him to L.A. — proof some things about a player don't change with the jersey.

I'd stood in that tunnel before, but this one felt different. Luka had just been traded to the Lakers, and this was the first time the Lakers were coming through Orlando to play the Magic. He'd been out warming up, and from where we stood we could see him — but seeing him and actually getting him to stop are two very different things.

LeBron plays for the Lakers too, and everybody knows LeBron doesn't really sign in the tunnel. I remember thinking: what if Luka's like that now? New team, new city, maybe a different guy surrounded by a different circle. I honestly wasn't sure it was going to happen.

Then the teams started heading back toward the locker room, and Luka stopped. He turned around and signed for everybody who was there — and he made sure to get to me. I handed him my Hoops rookie, the one from his very first season in Dallas, and he signed it right there in the tunnel wearing his new Lakers gear.

My dad was standing right next to me the whole time, so the second Luka handed it back, I just turned and showed it to him — I hadn't even really looked at it myself yet. That's still one of my favorite moments in this whole hobby — not just the autograph itself, but realizing the trade hadn't changed anything about who he actually is. He was still the same guy who stops for kids in the tunnel.

That's Luka Dončić for me — not just a favorite player on a card, but a favorite player, period.
We've already got plenty of pieces signed by Luka in the collection, so letting this one go doesn't mean letting go of the memory — I've got that either way. I'd rather it go find a new home with another collector who'll get just as much out of it as I did.
